#10. LIGHTNING NEVER STRIKES IN THE SAME PLACE TWICE
Lightning never strikes in the same place twice. We’ve all heard this phrase before, be it at work, at the dinner table, or even presented as fact in school, but nope, it’s not true. Lightning can and often strikes twice in the same place or at least within a close vicinity, the top of Empire State building has been struck by lightning at least 24 times before, so don’t get any ideas thinking that just because lightning has struck at a particular place it won’t again, wrong it can.
Instead, what you should do during a thunderstorm is to find shelter, stay away from windows and anything that conducts electricity. Also, if you’re outdoors, DO NOT find shelter under a tree as it’s the second worst place to be.
#9. BANANAS GROW ON TREES
Yeah, I’m quite sure all your life you’ve been told and taught that bananas grow on trees, well sorry to burst your bubble, but they don’t. the banana TREE is actually a large PLANT. Want proof? Look at the trunk is it made up of wood? No! instead it is made up of circles of layers of leaves. Also the banana plant doesn’t have strong wooden branches but have big green leaves that we all see , just like smaller plants. Also, the word banana is of African origin and the plant itself is said to have originated in Asia.
#8. LARGEST LIVING ORGANSIM IN THE WORLD
You might have been taught in school that the largest living organism in the world might be the sperm whale or the blue whale, well the truth might shock you but it’s actually the honey fungus in the Oregon blue mountains, this single organism has tens of thousands of itself stretching across 2.5sq miles or an equivalent 2035 football fields. And guess what? It is spreading!!!. No need for alarm, though, as it is mostly edible.

#7. HUMANS HAVE ONLY 5 SENSES
You were probably taught in primary school that we humans have only 5 senses which are feeling, tasting, smelling,hearing and seeing. Nope, we have as many as 3 more, equilibrioception, which is the sense of one’s balance, interception, which is the sense of one’s physiological condition and proprioception, which is sensing one’s orientation in space.
So next time, when told humans have only 5 senses, you can wow them and list these other senses.
#6. BATS ARE BLIND
You’ve probably heard the phrase that bats are blind or one of your friends describes the other as blind as a bat. Well, it is not necessarily true, bats aren’t blind but have very sensitive vision they see in black and white and not in colours like we do and also they see better at night or darkness in general better than we humans do but we humans can see better than them during daytime but this isn’t an obstacle for bats as they are born with sonar which helps them navigate without sight. It was from bats engineers developed sonar tech that we now use today.
#5. FAITH AS SMALL AS A MUSTARD SEED
You’ve probably heard the phrase “faith as small as that as a mustard seed,” from one of your acquaintances or at bible school, and this gave you the idea that the mustard seed is the smallest in the world. Well, that idea is wrong. It’s actually the orchid seed. This myth originated from the bible in which Jesus says “The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”
#4. THE COLOUR RED MAKES BULLS ANGRY
You probably seen cartoon(tom and jerry) and or movie clips that suggest that the colour red makes bulls really angry. Well, it ain’t true bulls are colour blind to the colour red and at most can recognise shades of the colours yellow and blue. They are, however highly aggressive creatures and it’s the constant taunting, provocation and constant waving around of the muleta(red cape), that provokes the bull to charge. So next time when you encounter a bull, don’t be scared it won’t charge at you for wearing red, it can’t see it but it can charge at you if you provoke it.
#3. HUMANS ONLY USE 10% OF THEIR BRAIN.
Due to false depictions in sci-fi movies and misquoted allusions to famous scientist Sir Isaac Newton most of the general population now have the common belief that humans are only capable of using 10% of their brain, which isn’t true.
The truth is different parts of the brain are active ALL THE TIME, depending on the activity you’re carrying out, even when you’re asleep. Learning a new skill, singing a song, or even surfing stimulate different parts of the brain. The part of the brain used varies from activity to activity but it still exceeds the touted 10%.
#2. OSTRICHES BEND THEIR HEAD BENEATH THE SAND WHEN SCARED
Another misconception and myth spread due to the activities of cartoons and the general movie industry. Ostriches are creatures that stand up to 9ft and have a top speed of up to 31 mph, so they are capable of evading predators on their own just fine. But ostriches are quite large birds with really small heads, so while ostriches are bending down foraging for food or digging a hole to place their eggs from afar, it might look like they’re burying their head in the sand!!!. But come on, if they do that, they wouldn’t be able to breathe would die before the predator even catches them.
#1. EARTH HAS ONLY THREE STATES OF MATTER
You’ve probably taught in primary school that we have only 3 states of matter gases, liquids, and solids. Well, have one more called plasma.
Plasma is a super-heated matter that is made up of only positively charged particles that have lost their negative counterparts, plasma is thought to be a subset of gases but aren’t since gases have both positive and negative particles. Most compounds can become plasma if heated high enough since plasma is made up of electrons. Water, for example, can become plasma if heated high enough, but most definitely not H2O, because it’s not even oxygen or hydrogen anymore.
